Ruhmkorff's Coil, also known as a Spark Coil, is a commonly used demonstration apparatus in the classroom for showcasing principles of electromagnetism and high voltage phenomena. Consisting of 2 coils, a primary coil with fewer turns and a secondary coil with more turns, the coil is wound around an iron core. When the primary coil is rapidly interrupted with an electric current, it triggers a high-voltage surge in the secondary coil, creating a visible spark across a small air gap or discharge tube.
Vibrating points made of tungsten ensure minimal arcing, while a top-quality capacitor and fuse protect the primary winding. The secondary winding, with thousands of turns, can be easily adjusted for optimal coupling.
