Description

Narika Optical d Timer Non-Contact for Ticker Tape:

The Narika Optical d-Timer (C15-1708 Recording Timer d) is a distance-measuring device designed for science experiments in school education — a modern, non-contact replacement for the traditional ticker tape timer. Instead of striking carbon dots onto paper, it shines light onto the recording tape inserted into its guide and uses an optical image sensor to continuously capture and analyse images of the tape's surface, determining travel distance and direction and outputting the data digitally via USB.

Attach the recording tape to a dynamics cart and move it: the device measures the tape's displacement over time, and the high-speed optical sensor lets results appear in real time as graphs in the dedicated web application — distance, speed and acceleration — making motion analysis dramatically more efficient. No dot counting, no carbon discs, no wasted lesson time.

Key Features

Non-contact measurement — Optical image sensing reads the tape surface directly — no dots, no carbon discs, no striker mechanism.

Real-time graphing — Distance–time graphs draw live in the dedicated web application; enable speed and acceleration graphs as needed.

Fine resolution — 0.001 m minimum display unit at 0.02 s measurement intervals, over 0–50 m depending on tape length.

Simple USB connection — One USB 2.0 cable (1 m, retractable into the body) provides power and data. Works with Windows 10/11 and ChromeOS.

Flexible control — Start/stop from the button on the device (recommended) or from the web application.

Measures direction too — Direction-aware sensing: motion opposite the arrow reads as negative, so reciprocal motion can be measured.

Compare & export — Save Box stores the last five runs for comparison; export and reopen data as CSV files.

     Classroom-ready — Compact (85 × 60 × 40 mm, approx. 100 g) with a camera mount screw hole; 1 roll of recording tape included.

Applications & Uses

Kinematics practicals with dynamics carts — uniform motion, acceleration down a ramp, and collision studies.

Reciprocal motion experiments, such as a cart rebounding from a wall via a spring, using direction-aware sensing.

Whole-class demonstrations with live distance, speed and acceleration graphs projected from the web application.

Student data analysis — export CSV files for further graphing and calculation work.

Any school physics experiment where a traditional ticker tape timer would be used — with faster setup and no consumable carbon discs.

How to Use - Instruction manual

1.   Cut the recording tape to the required length for the experiment (e.g. 50 cm) and insert it into the device through the insertion port.

1.   Attach the tape to a dynamics cart or similar equipment, positioning it as low as possible (close to the table) to prevent the tape sagging under its own weight.

2.   Pull the USB cable (Type-A) out of the cable storage and plug it into your PC — the lamp lights when powered, and blinks when tape movement is detected.

3.   Open the dedicated web application in your browser, click [Connect], select [OPTICAL d-TIMER], and click [Connect] again.

4.   Press the start/stop button on the device (recommended) or click [Start/Stop] in the app. Measurement always begins from 0.000 m, with a default time of 5 seconds (adjustable in Settings → Timeline).

5.   After the run, click [Adapter] to fit the graph to your data, use Show/Hide to add velocity and acceleration graphs, compare the last five runs in the Save Box, and save data as a CSV file.

6.   Handle with care: keep the device away from water, open flames, high temperatures and strong impacts; use it on a stable, level surface; and note the USB terminal is for communication and power only — it cannot charge other devices.
