A petrol hydrometer, typically designed to measure the density of petrol (specific gravity range of ~0.700–0.750), can detect contamination in diesel to a limited extent by measuring deviations in density. Diesel has a higher specific gravity (~0.800–0.850) than petrol, so a petrol hydrometer may indicate if diesel is mixed with petrol by showing an unexpectedly high density reading. For example, if the hydrometer reading exceeds the typical petrol range, it could suggest diesel contamination. However, there are limitations:
- Limited Range: A petrol hydrometer’s scale (e.g., 0.700–0.900) may not accurately measure diesel’s higher density or detect subtle contamination levels.
- Other Contaminants: Hydrometers are primarily density-based and may not detect other contaminants like water, sediment, or microbes unless they significantly alter the density. For instance, water (specific gravity ~1.0) would increase the reading, but small amounts might not be distinguishable.
