The Van de Graaff generator generates and stores a substantial quantity of static electricity on a metallic sphere. It includes a base, an insulating column, a large metallic sphere, and a smaller discharge sphere on an insulated handle linked to a grounded source. A nylon pulley within the base propels a rubber or latex belt over a metal pulley located in the upper sphere.
